MANAGING WORKPLACE STRESSORS

Your boss calls you into his cabin to give you a new project while you are already overwhelmed with 10 other assignments. Your deadlines are moved closer. Emails stack up one after another. Your phone's continuously buzzing. You have Zoom calls & Google meet conferences lined up for the rest of your day. And to top it all off, your coworker decides to ditch you on a shared assignment.

Does that sound familiar? Regardless of whether you absolutely love your job or simply see it as a money making process, there will inevitably be stressful elements

The corporate work culture is filled with pressure, deadlines, stress & anxiety. Ability to manage stress, cope with work pressure & fast changing environment has become a part of job description. While certain amount of stress can be healthy & can give you positive outcomes such as high performance, unresolved or ongoing stress causes fatigue & a weakened immune system.

“Is there a way to not feel so overwhelmed & stay awake all night plagued by work stress?” asked my client who works in IT sector. My answer is Yes.

  • Here are some simple & effective hacks I share with my clients to help them take their work stress down a notch, before it takes over their life:
  • Focus on what you can control

Stress hormone gets activated when we feel circumstances are out of our control. The key is to understand that for everything you can't control, there is generally something you can control. When everything seems to go haywire, try to keep your focus on your present & stay grounded.

    Don't neglect nutrition & sleep

Poor nutrition & insufficient sleep can stress your system. Eat a low sugar, high protein diet and ensure you get at least 6 hours of sleep every night. If you are too stressed out to fall asleep, practice a simple breathing technique that can help you quickly fall asleep: Cover your left nostril & breathe through your right for a couple of minutes & then repeat on the other side.

    Have an Energising Morning Routine

    Prioritise your priorities

With quickly changing priorities & competing deadlines, it's critical to define what is important and what is not. Maintaining a list of priorities can help you stay focused, & gain a better sense of purpose. Besides, it can be super satisfying to tick things off as you complete the tasks, giving you a feeling of control over your workload.

    Take time to recharge

Make sure you take some time out to relax & unwind so that you can come back feeling replenished & reinvigorated. Even if you are unable to take a vacation, try to get a quick boost by focusing on non work activities for a while.
