Mental Health in Women: It’s time to put yourself first

To the woman of today, the world is her oyster. Women are excelling in various elds, inching towards key ranking positions & scaling new heights in this male dominated world. Even as more & more women take up career driven roles, they continue to take care of their households & day to day tasks. But with the increased responsibility, focusing on mental health can be quite a task.

Common Mental Health Issues in Women:

Eating disorders

Eating disorders - anorexia & bulimia - are most common in women, especially younger women. Both of these eating disorders can cause serious physical issues apart from severe mental distress.

Anxiety

Women are twice as likely to experience panic attack & other anxiety disorders.

Depression

Depression is more common in women as a result of biological factors such as hormonal changes resulting from menopause.

Premenstrual Syndrome

PMS refers to the physical & emotional symptoms that occur in two weeks before a woman’s period. While some experience mild physical symptoms, others can experience severe symptoms of anxiety, depression & irritability.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

The risk of developing PTSD after a traumatic event is much higher in women as compared to men.

Post-natal Depression

Most women are likely to experience mild depression for a short span of time after having a baby. This is known as baby blues. However, some may develop postnatal depression which can be much more severe.

Tips to boost mental health in Women:

Have some Coffee

Too much caffeine can be a thing. However, starting the day off with a cup of hot coffee can promote wellbeing & give you the energy you need to manage your day. Caffeine is known to improve moods. One or two cups a day can be just the thing you need.

Take a break

Although daily stimulation can be benecial for your mind, going for long periods of time without a break can take a toll on your mental health. Take some time off every now & then to rejuvenate yourself.

Get creative

Take sometime out of your busy schedules to indulge in your passions. Creativity often brings a sense of joy & peace. So whether it is painting, dancing, reading or writing, be sure that it will be a form of release & relaxation which is great for your mental health.

Laugh more

Laughter is said to be the best medicine. Seek out more moments of humour & laughter & improve your physical & mental wellbeing. Humour lightens your burdens, connects you to others, releases anger & inspires hope.
